Nelson-Atkins Handy Map App

Find What You Need, While On the Go!

This app was created to allow local Kansas City residents to navigate the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art as it continues to expand into multiple buildings.

It includes app screens for museum hours, user profile, a way to search for current exhibits at the museum, a museum map, and an option to check-in for your visit to the museum!

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is adding additional buildings to the site campus in 2025.

The museum does not have a map app and has been using paper maps for visitors for many years.

The Nelson-Atkins requested an update in the form of a fairly basic app, including museum maps, a way to use mobile check-in without going all the way to the front desk in the Bloch Building, and a feature to search for upcoming exhibits at the museum to keep users coming back.

The Problem

Identifying the User

Several users would need to be able to use this app. People from ages 30-60 is the most consistent visitor demographic to the museum.

It needed to be very simple so that anyone would be able to use it.

We focused on bringing in branding and design from the Nelson-Atkins website and other packaging, which is famous for it’s shuttlecock sculptures on the lawn and bright orange logo.

We then added in a few key pieces to match the website, and a few key pieces of art from the museum to add interest to the app.

Design Components

The app was designed in Figma.

I also used a lot of images from the Nelson-Atkins website for the final design, which I optimized in Adobe Photoshop.

I used a few pre-made components in this design:

  • Action Sheet - iPhone
